The Main Gallery exhibits take visitors on a journey through time in the Salt River Valley. Explore the desert lifestyle of the prehistoric Hohokam, learn how Phoenix got its name, and find out why Phoenix’s population grew from 450 to 1.5 million in just 130 years! Along the way, you’ll learn about local history through artifacts, like a beer bottle sidewalk, and photos and stories of the people who helped create our city. Guests can visit “Hancock’s Store”, an exhibit about the first general store in Phoenix. The exhibit features four barrels containing scents that were typical in a general store of that era. Visitors are challenged to guess what was in each barrel. Was it black licorice or spearmint? Only a “nose knows”.
